Sterling silver jewelry is made from an alloy containing 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, typically copper. While more durable than pure silver, the following will help to keep it looking great and tarnish-free.
Regularly polish with a soft cloth to remove tarnish.
Store in a dry, airtight container to prevent oxidation.
Avoid exposure to chemicals (such as those found in hot tubs, pool, some perfumes etc)
You can easily clean silver jewelry at home using household items. Here's a simple DIY cleaning solution:
Mix equal parts water and mild dish soap in a bowl.
Soak the silver jewelry in the soapy water for a few minutes to loosen dirt and debris.
Gently scrub the jewelry with a soft-bristled toothbrush to remove any remaining residue.
Rinse the jewelry thoroughly under lukewarm water and pat dry with a clean, soft cloth.
Store in a ziploc bag to prevent oxidizing (tarnish)
Using this cleaning method the tarnish disappears due to an electrolytic reaction which transfers the oxidized tarnish from the silver to the aluminum foil.
- Line a large glass or metal baking dish with aluminum foil, shiny side facing up.
- Place the tarnished silver items onto the foil-lined tray.
- Pour boiling hot water into the tray, completely covering the silver items.
- Add two heaping tablespoons of baking soda to the water For best results sprinkle the baking soda evenly across the pan.
- Let the silver items soak in the baking soda and water for 30 minutes.
- Remove the silver pieces from the tray and rinse well and pat dry
